136. Notes on Stewardship


These are notes From April 26, 2015 from a Stewardship class offered at our church. I thought this was great material and figured I'd share! Comments in the { } are my thoughts.

Our church operates under the Biblical truth that everything was created by God and therefore belongs to God. Stewardship is the managing of resources… At SRC we are simply managers of God’s resources.

1. God owns everything
a. The World. – Exodus 19:5, Psalm 24:1-2
b. God owns us. – Deut. 32:6, Ez. 18:4, Rom 14:8, 1 Chron. 29:14
c. Everything we possess. -  Psalm 50:10, Haggai 2:8, Deut. 8:18
d. We are accountable for our stewardship. – Luke 19:11-27, Rom 14:12, 1 Peter 4:5

{We’re to engage in God’s business until our master returns!}

2. Examples of Stewards
a. The faithful steward – Luke 12:35-38
b. The unfaithful steward – Luke 16:1-8

3. Giving {generously & sacrificially} {Note: This one was giving the tithe originally}
a. Old Testament teaching was the tithe – Lev. 27:30-32, 2 Chron. 3:15; Mal. 3:8-10
b. New Testament teaching – generosity, maturity, & joy are factors in giving.

4. Giving – the heart factor. – 2 Cor. 9:7, Luke 12:34

5. Attitudes in giving
a. Without pretense – Matt. 23:23, Matt. 6:1-2
b. Self-sacrifice – living on less enables us to give more. – Matt. 19:21, Heb. 13:16
c. Give cheerfully – 2 Cor. 9:7

6. Results of Christian giving. 2 Cor. 9:11-13
a. Helping people in need. - Gal 2:10, Heb. 13:16, Gal 6:10
b. Helping Christians in need. – Rom 15:26, 1 Cor. 16:1-2

Stewardship goal: Honor God! To grow closer to the Lord make a difference for His Kingdom through a lifestyle of generous giving. Let’s do it!

135. Prosperity Vs Poverty “gospels”



Remove far from me falsehood and lying;

    give me neither poverty nor riches;
    feed me with the food that is needful for me. – Proverbs 30:8


Deception in Extremes

The difference between truth and error is often extremes. Those extremes can be at either end of the spectrum. Jesus was tempted by Satan in Matthew 3 and 4. Each of the three temptations mentioned were perversions of the truth. In fact, Satan quoted Scripture and applied it out of context to an extreme. Jesus countered with further Scripture to correct and rebuke Satan.

Distortions of the Truth
People have taken God’s words as found in the Bible and distorted them to suit their own desires and purposes. In Acts and Galatians it was Judaizes who wanted to impose Jewish law on Gentiles. In the middle ages (and even in some cases today) it was errant teachings on the concept of purgatory, praying to saints, earning salvation through good works, and the religious institutions selling items for healing and salvation.


A false balance is an abomination to the Lord,
    but a just weight is his delight. – Proverbs 11:1


The Balance, Jesus, the Bible, & The Holy Spirit
But I digress. The topic of this post is the Prosperity versus the Poverty “gospels”. Truth can only be found in the person of Jesus Christ. ( for example Col. 2:3) Truth can only be found in God’s words – the Bible. The Holy Spirit is the Teacher of truth as called by Jesus. (for example John 14:17, 15:26, John 16:13, 1 John 4:6)

I realize there’s a vast array of ideologies in Christendom today. Not everyone will have a consistent career. Not everyone will be a home owner. Not everyone will face serious tragedy. Not everyone will face serious medical challenges. But let’s take a moment to look at these two ideas: poverty & prosperity.

The Poverty "gospel" (Also known as the Ascetic Piety)
Prior to the 1940’s and 1950’s it seems there was a “poverty mentality” that was prevalent in the Church. This was due in part to centuries of teachings and preaching on “money being the root of all evil”. Ministers of the Gospel, pastors, and priests were encouraged to take a “vow of poverty”. The truth is that “the LOVE of money is at the root of all kinds of evil”. (See for example 1 Tim. 6:10)

It was time for a pendulum swing in the opposite direction as well. Enter the prosperity gospel...

The Prosperity "gospel" (Also known as the Health and Wealth "gospel")
So there came a movement from the 1960’s to the 2000’s (and still prevalent among some today) of charismatic neo-Pentecostal preachers, televangelists, that taught it was God’s desire to bless and prosper His people both physically and financially.

Let me be perfectly clear here. The prosperity gospel is no gospel at all. It’s a false balance of the truth found in the Bible.

A Warning About Money 

It is not possible to be obsessed about God and money. One will be your love. The other you will hate. Remember that money is a means to an end and not the end itself.

No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”
– Luke 16:13

God's Mission

Above all I believe God wishes for His Name to be known, rescue the nations by the power of the death & resurrection of Jesus Christ, reconcile all wrongs, recover what was lost in the fall, restore creation to its perfectly created purpose, and the redemptive Gospel to be proclaimed. God doesn’t want to simply prosper us financially as some in the prosperity gospel camp would lead you to believe. God also doesn’t command all who believe in Jesus to be dirt poor. God is all about love, grace, compassion, mercy, justice, and long-suffering. God is about His mission – Building His Church and restoring those who would believe to Himself.


Honoring God & Gifts from God

God is honored when Believers serve Him faithfully. God does give good gifts to His children.

"If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father give what is good to those who ask Him" (Mat. 7:11).

Trying to Find a Balance
So where do we land on this subject? Paul summed it up well by saying:


If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!– Matthew 7:11

I think the balance is we’re to strive to work hard, glorify God by serving Him faithfully, and that God promises to supply our needs.

What are needs in my opinion?
So before closing I think we need to try to define needs. Notice Paul didn’t say a 1 million dollar mansion, clothes that cost a small fortune, or the $100,000 dollar car. I would say “needs” would include basic shelter, transportation, clothing, and food. 

Not every Christian will be wealthy in the U.S.A. Not every Christian will be below the poverty limit in the U.S.A. Also many people in other cultures may not have the same "needs" as those in the West.

However, we I hope we can all agree we want to be good stewards of what blessings God does give us.

134. 100 Encouraging Bible Verses


The Word of God is full of encouraging verses that give us hope and strength for every situation we’re in.  Whether you’ve found yourself struggling with your relationships, laid off from a job, struggling with work, struggling with family or friends, nervous about an upcoming test, or even a project presentation at work, I’d encourage you to turn to these encouraging Bible verses.

There are over 100 listed here, so I’m sure you can read through one that resonates with your situation!

My 20 Absolute Favorite Encouraging Bible Verses

As I read through each of these verses, I pulled twenty encouraging scriptures that really stood out to me as inspiring.  Here they are in order of where they are in the Bible.

Psalm 23:4  Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

Psalm 34:8  Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.

Psalm 34:19  The righteous person may have many troubles, but the LORD delivers him from them all;

Psalm 37:4  Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Psalm 55:22  Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.

Hebrews 10:19-23 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.

Hebrews 13:5 Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said,  “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

James 1:2-4 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

James 1:12-15 Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

James 4:7-8 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

1 Peter 5:7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

1 John 4:4  You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.

1 John 4:18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

1 John 5:14-15 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.


Revelation 14:12 This calls for patient endurance on the part of the people of God who keep his commands and remain faithful to Jesus.
