65. Stewardship, Giving, and Tithing Revisited Part 1

Biblical Stewardship and Generosity. A bit of a controversial, complicated, and involved subject right? Yet regardless if you believe in tithing or not… Particularly when speaking of bringing balance to the discussion. Stewardship and generosity are very important to any Believer today.  This is the first part of the sermon preached by our pastor. We are going through the books of 1 and 2 Cor. I’ll post the second part on a separate post.

Part 1 - Foundational Biblical truths about money and possessions (1-5)

1. Everything belongs to God. See Psalms 24

2. God permits temporary ownership of His Creation: Gen 1, Exodus 20

3. God gives resources in order to provide for self and family (Stewardship):

See 1 Thess. 4:11-12; 2 Thess. 3:6, 12; 1 Tim. 5:8; 1 Tim 4:1-5; Heb. 13:5; Psalm 62:10; Ecc. 5:10; Matt 6:19-21, 24; Luke 12:15-21; 15:11-13; James 5:5; 1 John 2:16; 1 John 3:17; Mark 4:19; Luke 6:24)

4. God gives resources to support the work of God’s Kingdom (tithing, giving, or collection for the saints):

See Lev 27:30; Lev 27:32; Gen 14:20; Gen 28:22; Num. 18:21, 26; Deut. 12:17, Deut. 14:22; Deut. 26:12-13; Phil 4:14-19; 1 Tim 5:17-18, 1 Cor. 9:6-14; Gal 6:6; Matt 23:23

5. God gives resources to help those who are in need (alms giving or offerings):

Luke 6:32-36; Mark 10:21-22; 1 John 3:17; James 2:14-17; Acts 21:17, 24:17; Rom. 15:25-28, 31; 1 Cor. 16:1-4; 2 Cor. 8:1-4, 9:1-5; Gal 6:10; 1 John 3:17

Thoughts? Do you agree or disagree with the above 5 basic truths?
